dc.description.abstractThe purpose of the study was to investigate the factors affecting uptake of medical insurance among university students in Uganda. The research was based on three main objectives; to identify the importance of medical insurance among university students, to identify the types of medical insurance available in the different insurance companies and to identify the challenges associated with the uptake of medical insurance among university students and suggest possible solutions to overcome them. The research used both primary and secondary data sources. A cross-sectional survey design method was employed for collecting data in the field of study. Research findings on objective one showed that having medical insurance had a significant impact on the students’ health in that it could provide a peace of mind regarding health expenses. Research findings on objective two showed that there are a variety of insurance types available for students but mostly they would opt for inpatient medical insurance, family medical insurance, out-patient, dental insurance which are in line with students’ way of living. Findings on objective three showed that cost of medical insurance has significant impact on obtaining the coverage. Findings on objective four showed that obtaining subsidized or discounted student insurance plans provides a better solution to improve students access to health insurance. The research concluded that medical insurance awareness has a significant impact on uptake of insurance.The researcher recommended that a comprehensive educational program to enable students improve their understanding of the health insurance had to be done, family and school insurance program should be put in place, reducing high costs associated with insurance and exploring for subsidized or discounted student insurance plans aimed at increasing outreach.
