Abstract

The study was on the effect of extrinsic motivation on employee performance in Mbale district local government. The study was supported by the research objectives which included determining the different ways in which employees are motivated in Mbale district local government.determining the different ways in which performance is measured in Mbale district and assessing the relationship between motivation and employee performance in Mbale district local government. The study used descriptive research design and non-descriptive a sample of 80 respondents was used in the study. The findings revealed that salary and wage payment, bonus payment, advance payments, annual and sick leave payments, financial support for employees’ upgrade and training to improve on performance, transport and accommodation allowance and car benefits are the different ways in which employees are motivated in Mbale district local government .Furthermore, the findings show that timely reporting ensures better financial performance as a result of employee performance, management by objectives is a measure of employee performance, check lists are a measure of employee performance, self-evaluation is a measure of employee performance, graphic rating scales measures employee performance. Besides, from the study it was found out that employee motivation led to attainment of organizational goals thus organizational performance, employee motivation employee turn-over is minimized, and employee motivation leads to proper resource utilization leading to organizational performance. This shows that there is positive significant relationship between motivation and employee performance. This indicates that there was significant relation between motivation and employee performance which is sig .889 = 88.9%, which is more than 0.005. While other factors account for 11.1%. The researcher recommends that the authorities should continue to train its staff, carry out mentorship programs, encourage team work, motivation and carry out training across all departments.
