| dc.description.abstract | Despite ongoing efforts by development organizations and local governments to promote economic empowerment in rural areas, many communities in Uganda—particularly in subcounties like Bukiyi in Sironko District—continue to experience high levels of poverty, unemployment, and limited access to economic opportunities. The Mbale Area Federation of Communities (MAFOC), a community-based organization under the ChildFund model, was established with the objective of empowering local populations through savings groups, vocational skills training, financial literacy programs, and small business support. However, there is limited documented evidence on the actual impact of MAFOC’s interventions on the economic lives of beneficiaries in Bukiyi Sub-county. Many households remain economically vulnerable, and questions persist regarding the effectiveness, reach, and sustainability of MAFOC’s programs in addressing these challenges. While similar federations have shown promising results in other regions by improving household incomes, promoting self-reliance, and enhancing access to credit and markets, it is unclear whether these outcomes have been fully realized in Bukiyi Sub-county. Anecdotal reports indicate that some beneficiaries have benefited from skills training and startup support, yet there is a lack of comprehensive research examining how these interventions have translated into measurable economic improvement. Additionally, challenges such as low participation, inadequate funding, poor follow-up, and limited local ownership may hinder the success of MAFOC’s programs in the region. Without a clear understanding of the extent to which MAFOC has contributed to economic empowerment, it becomes difficult for policymakers, development partners, and community leaders to make informed decisions that could enhance the effectiveness of community-based interventions. Therefore, this research is necessary to bridge the existing knowledge gap by providing empirical data on the impact of MAFOC’s initiatives on economic empowerment in Bukiyi Sub-county. The findings of this study will be essential in assessing the strengths and weaknesses of current programs, guiding strategic improvements, and ensuring that future interventions are better aligned with the needs and aspirations of the community. By evaluating the role of MAFOC, the study will contribute to the broader discourse on community-driven development and offer recommendations for scaling up successful practices within Sironko District and beyond. | |
