Abstract
This research report investigates the effect gender based violence on the academic performance of pupils in Agago district focusing specifically on Patongo Akwe Primary School. The study is based on three main objectives: to examine the effect of sexual violence at home on the academic performance of pupils in Patongo Akwe primary school, to examine the effect of child neglect at home on the academic performance of pupils in Patongo Akwe primary school, and to examine the effect of Emotional abuse at home on the academic performance of pupils in Patongo Akwe primary school. The researcher gathered data from a sample of 68 respondents, using mixed-method approach that included questionnaires and interviews, for comprehensive data analysis. The findings indicate pupil’s academic performance is significantly affected by experiences of sexual abuse, child neglect and emotional abuse at home. Sepcifically 91.2% of the respondents acknowledged that experiences such as defilement, assault, bad touches, and sexualized conversations with a child can negatively impact academic success, likewise 89.7% agreed that when parents or care givers fail to meet the basic physical and emotional needs like food, shelter, education, access to medical care and having the feelings of children appropriately responded to, it can affect their academic performance, and 85.3% of the respondents agree with the statement that name-calling, withholding love, rejection, threats of various consequences/punishment, chronic yelling, swearing and insults on a child can affect their academic performance. The report calls for the government to enhance policies related to gender based violence, encourages schools to work closely with the parents in supporting children, and urges community and local leaders to educate families about the detrimental effects of gender-based violence on children’s academic success.
