Abstract
This research report was undertaken to examine effect of substance abuse on the severity of mental health disorders in bungokho sub-county, Mbale district and it was carried out with the help of three specific objectives, that is; to investigate the relationship between mental health disorders and drug abuse in Bungokho sub-county, to examine the common types of substances abused and their effects on mental health in Bungokho sub-county, to identify the possible solutions for mitigating the impact of drug abuse on mental health disorders in Bungokho sub-county. The researcher used a sample size of 63 respondents and used questionnaires to collect data and later the data was analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). Results of the first objective showed that there is a positive relationship between mental health disorders and drug abuse in Bungokho sub-county; 54% of the respondents were positive to the statement that drug abuse and mental health disorders often reinforce each other, where substance use worsens mental health conditions, and mental health struggles increase the likelihood of drug dependence; 62% were positive to the statement that many individuals suffer from co-occurring disorders where they experience both substance abuse and mental health issues simultaneously, requiring integrated treatment approaches. Results of the second objective revealed common types of substances abused have a significant effect on mental health in Bungokho sub-county. Supported by the following responses; 56% of the respondents were positive to the statement that alcohol abuse can lead to depression, anxiety, and memory loss, impairing cognitive function and emotional regulation, 80% of the respondents were positive to the statement that regular cannabis use can contribute to paranoia, anxiety, and can exacerbate conditions like schizophrenia or depression in vulnerable individuals. Results of the third objective showed that possible solutions for mitigating the impact of drug abuse has a significant effect on mental health disorders in Bungokho sub-county. 62% forming the majority of respondents were positive to the statement that educating communities about the dangers of drug abuse and its impact on mental health can help prevent substance use and encourage early intervention. There is need for the government to invest in comprehensive mental health and substance abuse programs that address their interconnection through policy, funding, and education. National health strategies should include dual-diagnosis treatment models, where mental health and addiction services work collaboratively.
